Aging causes changes to the eyes that can adversely affect your vision, Macular degeneration is a progressive condition that causes gradual loss in the central field of vision. At Hofacre Optometric, we help our patients manage eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, so they can continue to enjoy good vision at every stage of life.
What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration is a progressive eye disease that affects individuals over the age of 60. The condition affects the light-sensing cells of the macula, an area of the retina. The disease causes gradual reduction in the ability to see objects in fine detail, as well as the ability to drive, to read, and other tasks. Your optometrist in Chino Hills and San Dimas can detect early signs of macular degeneration during a comprehensive examination of your eyes.
Types of AMD and Their Symptoms
AMD can be found in two different forms, the dry form and the wet form. In the more common dry form, small whitish or yellowish deposits, called drusa, develop on the retina, which causes deterioration of the cells over time. In the wet form, abnormal blood vessels begin to develop, which may break, bleed or leak fluid. This action can result in rapid loss of vision.
Causes of AMD
Aging is a primary cause of age-related macular degeneration. Smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity are also all linked to higher rates of AMD. If someone in your family had AMD, your risk increases. If you are female, light-skinned and have a light eye color, you are also at higher risk for AMD.
Treatment for AMD
Currently, no approved treatment for the dry form of AMD is available. However, Research suggests, eating foods high in antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids can help slow the progress of the disease. Avoid artificial fats, such as partially hydrogenated vegetable oils. Supplements of lutein, zeaxanthin, vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and copper are also recommended. For the dry form of AMD, your eye doctor can administer injections to reduce the growth of new blood vessels, photodynamic therapy, and laser surgery that will help to manage the disease.
