LASIK Vision Surgery Information from our Optometrists in Chino Hills and San Dimas
The term LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses. It is a procedure performed with a laser that is designed to reshape the cornea and improve vision, ideally to the point where other types of vision correction are not necessary. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASIK surgery, however. Here at Hofacre Optometric, our optometrists in San Dimas and Chino Hills can aid you in determining whether you wish to pursue the procedure.
Who Should Have LASIK?
Ideal candidates for LASIK have mild or moderate myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness). They may have mild to moderate astigmatism as well. Other types of refractive errors are more difficult to correct with LASIK, and another type of procedure may be a better fit.
Considerations that will be discussed during a LASIK consultation include things like eye health, age, and any medications you may be taking. Our optometrist can explain to you why certain vision conditions may mean that you are not an ideal candidate for LASIK:
- Severe dry eye
In addition to eye conditions, certain medications being taken for other diseases can interfere with the surgical process. Certain health conditions, whether or not they require medications, may make people ineligible for LASIK. People under 18 are not considered candidates for LASIK because their vision tends to still be changing.
Is LASIK Permanent?
The effects of LASIK are permanent, but they do not compensate for any future changes to your vision. So, even if your LASIK procedure results in perfect 20/20 vision, it is possible that you would need glasses or contacts again in the future. Although most people who have LASIK are happy with the results, not all of them achieve 20/20 vision. Part of being an ideal candidate for LASIK is being willing to accept the small amount of uncertainty that goes along with the procedure.
Typical LASIK Results
In a review of articles published between 2008 and 2015 concerning LASIK surgery, researchers found that outcomes were generally positive:
- 99.5%of people achieved 20/40 or better visual acuity
- 98.8% of people were satisfied with the results
Our optometrist can tell you more about what factors affect the outcomes of LASIK vision correction, and what kind of results you can expect. Our optometry clinic provides referrals to the best local ophthalmologists for patients who choose to go ahead with vision correction surgery.
