Eye Infections

Eye Infections

If you're experiencing itching, swelling, pain, and/or irritation in your eye, you may have an eye infection. Eye infections are uncomfortable and, without proper treatment, could lead to irreversible damage. It's not all doom and gloom, however, since infections of the eye are typically easy to treat. Our Chino Hills eye doctors at Hofacre Optometric Corporation regularly provide treatment for eye infections to our patients when they visit our office conveniently located inside of Costco. Many of our patients are unaware of how serious eye infections can be if left untreated. That is why we have compiled the following information about eye infections.

.

Common Eye Infections

  • Conjunctivitis: Also known as pink eye, conjunctivitis occurs when the blood vessels of the outermost membrane around the eyeball become infected.
  • Sty: A bump similar to a pimple that develops on the outer edge of eyelids.
  • Endophthalmitis: Inflammation of the inside of the eye.
  • Uveitis: Occurs when the uvea, the central layer on the eyeball, becomes infected and inflamed.
  • Keratitis: Cornea infection caused by an eye injury as well as viral, parasitic, fungal, or bacterial.
  • Cellulitis: Infected eye tissues. Often caused by an injury to the eye, such as a scratch.
  • Blepharitis: Inflammation of the eyelids.
  • Ocular Herpes: Eyes infected with herpes simplex virus.

Eye infections typically fall into one of three categories: bacterial, viral, and fungal. While many of them share the same common symptoms, the required treatment can be vastly different. That is why it is important to visit an eye doctor whenever you suspect there may be a problem.

If left untreated, the infection in your eye can worsen, negatively affecting not only your vision but the overall health of your eye as well. In addition, it is not uncommon for eye infections to be contagious, and not seeking treatment means you are also spreading the infection to others.

How Can an Eye Doctor Help?

The optometrist has the equipment, as well as the knowledge, to diagnose eye infections and provide treatment for the infection. They can also guide good eye health and how to keep the infection from returning. Furthermore, the eye doctor can determine if the infection is a symptom of a more serious condition that needs to be addressed.
