Expert care for cataract removal from an eye care doctor
If you think only older adults have cataracts, think again. Cataracts can occur at any age. Cataracts can even be present at birth.
What is a cataract?
It’s a clouding of the eye’s lens. It is also the leading cause of blindness worldwide, and the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. More than 20 million Americans aged 40 and older have at least one cataract in one or both eyes. About 6 million Americans have had their lens surgically removed to correct cataracts. The CDC estimates that the total number of people who have cataracts could increase to over 30 million by 2020.
Although cataract removal surgery is widely available, many people cannot get treatment due to lack of insurance coverage, treatment costs, personal choice or lack of awareness that effective treatment exists.
What is cataract surgery?
The most common and advanced form of cataract removal is called phacoemulsification. An ophthalmologist (eye care doctor) can usually perform this procedure in less than 30 minutes with only minimal sedation, such as numbing eyedrops. In general, there are no stitches used, and no eye patch is needed after surgery.
Though we do not do any surgery at Hofacre Optometric, we have excellent relationships with a number of reputable ophthalmologists (eye surgeons) in the area and will refer our patients who may need surgery to the appropriate physician. We typically co-manage treatment to ensure the best care and results.
