What You Can Expect In a Routine Eye Exam

A routine eye exam does much more than just check for blurry vision. At Hofacre Optometric Corporation, our optometry team diagnoses manages and treats several different eye disorders and diseases. We perform eye exams to detect problems with the retina and cornea, including checking for floaters, flashes, and keratoconus. Having your vision checked regularly allows our eye doctors in Chino Hills and San Dimas to quickly treat any eye problems before they become worse. If it has been a while since your last eye exam, contact our team today to schedule an appointment with one of our optometrists.

Eye Exams Are Important

Eye exams are performed for many reasons, whether for a vision screening for a young child, preventative reasons, or for glasses and contacts. A basic acuity exam does not provide enough of an assessment to gauge a patient’s eye health. Our comprehensive eye evaluation utilizes several different tests to allow our optometry team to assess the patient’s full eye health.

Younger children need to receive assessments every six months. For elderly patients, we also recommend bi-yearly exams. Anyone aged 18 - 40 needs annual exams since many eye diseases, including glaucoma, do not have visual signs and can only be detected by an eye care professional.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

Eye exams take about an hour. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them with you to the appointment. Your assessment will begin with a visual acuity test that can determine the clarity of your vision. Once we determine if you need corrective lenses, we will perform refraction testing. Next, a visual field test will measure your peripheral vision to help the eye doctor diagnose various eye conditions. We will also perform a cover test to detect a lazy eye or crossed eye. A slit lamp test gives us a full-aspect 3-D view of the different parts of your eyes. We also thoroughly examine your retinas, optic nerves, and macula.

Protect Your Eye Health with Regular Eye Exams

Many of our patients in Chino Hills and San Dimas do not think about their eyes until they notice they are having difficulty seeing. However, your eye health is more than just your vision. We recommend regularly scheduling eye exams for your family at Hofacre Optometric Corporation. Call our Chino Hills office today at (909) 628-0091 or our San Dimas office at (909) 394-4545.
