Preparing for a Pediatric Optometry Exam

For young kids, any visit to a doctor can be scary or intimidating. Usually, knowing what to expect is the best way to overcome anxiety and uncertainty. Hofacre Optometric Corporation offers pediatric eye exams for kids across Chino Hills and San Dimas. This overview of how those exams work can help you understand what your child should expect and how to make the experience as pleasant as possible.

What to Expect at a Pediatric Optometry Appointment

Whether or not it’s a child’s very first eye appointment, the standard group of vision tests is light, easy on the kids and doesn’t take long. In most cases, there will be three distinct tests that give your optometrist a good idea of your child’s overall vision.

A visual acuity test is the standard place to start. This is the eye chart test that you have done plenty of times in your life. If your child is of reading age, they’ll likely be given the normal chart. For kids below reading age (or with special needs), a shape-based chart can be used instead. The accuracy of the test doesn’t suffer.

A pupil test is also part of the standard procedure. It tests pupil responsiveness. In most cases, it’s as simple as shining a light in the eye to make sure the pupil contracts appropriately. In rare cases, eye drops or other special measures may be necessary for a complete test.

The last of the normal tests looks at eye movement. This is where you follow the doctor’s finger with your eye. For younger kids, something more interesting than a finger might be used for the movement test, but the purpose is the same. It ensures that visual tracking and peripheral vision are working as they should.

Preparing for the Exam

Once you know what to expect from the exam, it is easier to prepare your child. Setting expectations is usually the best way to ensure a smooth, stress-free exam. You can explain to your child what the tests will involve and what they need to do. You can also rest assured that anything potentially painful or uncomfortable is not part of the standard eye exam. If such specialty tests are warranted, you’ll have a conversation with your doctor first.
