Pediatric Eye Exams

Pediatric Eye Exams With Our Chino Hills Optometrist

For many parents of past generations, pediatric eye care didn't necessarily come until the child was in school, Often, the child had trouble during a vision screening, or it was discovered that they were squinting to see. But taking care of a child's eyes and vision starts before that,  and more and more pediatricians are recommending eye exams even before a child's first birthday. With eye exams performed at six months, three years, and by first exam these kids get an advantage even before they begin the meat of their education. At Hofacre Opmetric in Chino Hills and San Dimas, our Doctor of Optometry makes pediatric eye care a priority. Because being able to see well is linked to learning, it is important to get started early.

What Happens During a Pediatric Eye Exam?

When your young child has an eye exam, the optometrist will check several things to make sure that their eyes are developing correcting, and take the right steps to correct and problems that may be occurring. As with many health conditions, catching eye issues early allows for the best chance of correction with  minimal negative impact on your child's daily life. Some things we check for in babies upt to a year include

  • Nearsightedness - Objects far away are blurry
  • Farsightedness - Objects close up are blurry
  • Astigmatism- abnormal shape to eye casing general blurriness
  • Amblyopia (one eye weaker than the other)
  • Eye movement
  • Eye Alignment
  • Ability of eyes to adjust in different levels of light.

For children older than three, eye exams are a little more like adult exams. Eye charts are used , but children are asked to identify pictures or may play the tumbling "E" game rather than reading letters. Since you know your child best, it is important to communicate with the eye doctor on what types of tests will work best.

If there are vision problems, we work hard to get your child's prescription right if they need glasses or see that they get the right vision treatment in order to keep their eyes as strong and healthy throughout their childhood and beyond.
