Computer Vision
Digital devices have become important parts of our lives. However, computer screens, tablets, and cell phones are causing a common condition known as computer vision, or digital eye strain. At Hofacre Optometric Corporation, serving Chino Hills and San Dimas, CA, our optometry team is here to help you reduce your risk of eye strain and the symptoms that are accompanied by it. Here are some ways to combat digital eye strain at home.
Use Proper Lighting
Excessive bright light in your office or at home can cause eye strain. Use shades or fewer light bulbs to lower the intensity. Position your computer with windows on the side or behind you. It is also a good idea to lower the brightness on your screen if possible or set it to ‘night mode’.
Reduce Glare
Light reflects off of walls, surfaces, and computer screens. Anti-glare screens and glasses can help reduce the amount of light that bounces off of these surfaces. You can also consider wearing glasses that protect your eyes against blue light. It is also important to sit about an arm’s length away from your screen.
Take Breaks
You have a natural tendency to blink less when you are using a computer. Less blinking puts more strain on your eyes and can cause dry eye. Look away for a bit after every 20 to 30 minutes of activity on a computer or electronic device.
Get Regular Eye Exams
A routine eye exam is your best line of defense for treating the effects of computer vision. Our eye doctor can evaluate your eyes and provide computer lenses for eyeglasses to protect your eyes from dry eye and digital strain.
